~ Window Fashions Leader Captures Top Prizes and Much More ~
UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J., April 5, 2011 – The Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) Product Awards are the benchmark of excellence in the industry. The 2011 results were just announced and Hunter Douglas, Inc., North America’s leading manufacturer and marketer of custom window fashions, has, once again, led the field.
The company captured the coveted Product of the Year for the 11th year as well as the prestigious Judges’ Award reserved for a submission selected by the panel that exhibits measurable benefit or standout appeal to end users. This year for the 16th consecutive year, Hunter Douglas won more awards than any other manufacturer – an impressive 30 of the 47 awards conferred went to Hunter Douglas companies. The window fashions leader garnered five out of seven awards in the new Green Products Category and swept the Shadings and Sheers Category. In the Merchandising Category, Hunter Douglas won 9 out of the 10 awards conferred.

Vignette® Traversed™ with Vertiglide™ Modern Draperies was named 2011 WCMA Product of the Year. Ideal for expansive windows/doors, this new product offers Vignette shades in a vertical application and provides a totally coordinated room solution. It combines the beauty of Vignette shades with the convenience and easy operation of a vertical window covering. The proprietary Vertiglide operating system is easy to install, operate and maintain. A low-profile fabric-covered headrail is standard. This product also won Best New Style Concept and Most Innovative Overall Concept in the Specialty Applications Category.
Luminette® Privacy Sheers & Modern Draperies: Manhattan™ Decorative Hardware received the discretionary Judges’ Award, the only one granted this year, as well as Best New Technical Innovation in the Drapery Hardware Category. Available in May with all Luminette Privacy Sheers and Modern Draperies fabrics, Manhattan Decorative Hardware adds sophisticated style to windows and consists of decorative drapery rails and finials with a smooth combination wand/cord operating system. It comes in two rail styles, smooth and fluted, in three colors each. In addition to the standard button finial, three optional finials are available – Madison, Fifth Avenue and Broadway – that coordinate or contrast with the rail color.
In the Green Products: Energy Efficiency Category, Duette® Architella® Batiste Fabrics with IllumiCell™ walked away with Best New Style Concept. This new offering consists of two fabrics: the linen-inspired Batiste Textured™ and Batiste Bamboo, which is made from sustainable and recycled materials with its own natural variations. In fact, 45 percent of the fabric is bamboo. Both fabrics feature IllumiCell™, a clear inner honeycomb that allows greater transmission of light, making the fabric’s natural texture more visible. IllumiCell offers the same great energy efficiency as the original Architella construction.
The Duette Architella Batiste Bamboo fabric also won Best New Style Concept in the Green Products: Sustainability Category. Most Innovative Overall Concept in the Green Products: Energy Efficiency Category went to Vignette® Tiered™ Architella® Modern Roman Shades, which offers Vignette shades with enhanced energy efficiency. Rear fabric air pockets behind each fabric fold trap air and double the degree of insulation added by traditional Vignette Tiered shades. The sound absorption rating is also the highest of any Hunter Douglas product.
In the Green Products: Health and Environmental Safety Category, the only award bestowed was to Enhancements to Vignette® Modern Roman Shades, which received Best Overall Concept. These new additions – Vignette Tiered Architella shades with added energy efficiency and Vignette Traversed with Vertiglide shades, offering a vertical Roman shade that traverses – both also provide enhanced child safety. Like all Vignette shades and unlike typical Roman shades, there are no exposed rear cords. And, like most Hunter Douglas product offerings, these shades have passed rigorous standards and test procedures and are GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified® and GREENGUARD for Children & SchoolsSM Certified.
The new 2011 Duette® and Applause® honeycomb shades offering was honored with Best Enhancements in the Cellular Shades Category. In addition to the Architella Batiste fabrics with IllumiCell, the enhancements include increased color-coordination possibilities with the Vertiglide™ system, new 144” maximum heights for PowerRise® 2.0 with Platinum™ Technology, Duette Skylight™ with PowerRise 2.0 reintroduced with a robust and proven motor, new end mount brackets for common headrail shades, and a designer tassel and new stopball on standard cordlock shades for enhanced aesthetics.
2011 Enhancements to The Alustra® Collection won Best New Style Enhancements in the Miscellaneous Category of the awards, as the collection bridges product groups. Built on a foundation of exclusivity and design with signature elements such as exclusive fabrics, finishes, systems, Alustra has been taken to new heights with enhancements in every category. Soft Screens™ and Screen Shades redefine traditional solar screens by fusing functionality with style. The naturally-textured Brio woven sheer elevates Alustra Silhouette® window shadings. Alustra Duette® honeycomb shades transition completely to the Architella® construction, while Alustra Vignette® Modern Roman Shades benefit from new fabrics.
In the same category, Luminette® Modern Draperies Ribbon™ Panel Design was named Best Overall Concept. The Ribbon Panel design is a brand new drapery choice for consumers – seamless rippled fabric with an inviting, deep dimensionality and a smooth, uniform appearance. Available in sizes up to 192" wide and 120" high, this new design is offered in all Luminette Modern Draperies fabrics exclusively on the Manhattan Decorative Hardware system. The unique Ribbon Panel design is available in side stack and split stack configurations and features convenient operation using the Luminette combination wand/cord.
The only award in the Shadings and Sheers Category went to the 2011 Silhouette® Window Shadings Collection, which garnered Best Overall Concept. This exciting collection offers four beautiful new fabrics. These include Chateau™, reminiscent of raw silk and featuring richly textured vanes with a coordinated colored face sheer; Nouveau™, inspired by wheat fields and northern woods with natural horizontal textures; Voila™, a light iridescent pinstripe featured on the front sheer for a subtle design touch to any room and, lastly, Sunscreen privacy shadings, an ideal alternative to traditional sunscreens with the added benefit of light control and privacy.
UltraGrain™ – The New Finish for NewStyle® Hybrid Shutters won Best New Enhancement in the Shutters Category. This state-of-the-art finish only available in NewStyle authentically replicates the color and grain pattern of real, stained wood. It comes in four colors designed to match today’s most popular interior woodwork and home furnishing trends – Golden Oak, Warm Cherry, Amaretto and Bahama Brown. It is finished with the Finetech® finish, which is smooth and lustrous to touch and beautiful to eye. NewStyle hybrid shutters with the UltraGrain finish are made with composite material to add strength, stability and straightness to the shutter and finished with the Finetech® finish, which is smooth and lustrous to touch and beautiful to eye. NewStyle hybrid shutters with the UltraGrain finish: A shutter that looks like real, stained wood at fraction of cost of real wood. Natural Elements™: A Collection of Modern Precious Metals® Blinds was honored with Best New Style Concept in the Horizontal Blinds Category. Inspired by the colors and textures of nature, Natural Elements blinds mix two-inch metal slats with a wood valance, bottom rail and tassels. Customers choose their slat finish and wood accent color to personalize blinds to their room decor. Exclusive Matte™, Metallic™ and Riverstone™ slat finishes come in earthy and trendy colors. The contemporary Artemis™ valance, de-Light™ routless feature and exclusive EPIC™ operating system are standard. Several options are available, including the MagnaView™ tilt feature.
HUNTER DOUGLAS TOPS MERCHANDISING CATEGORY WITH NINE OUT OF 10 AWARDS Not surprisingly, Hunter Douglas topped the Merchandising Category with nine out of the 10 awards bestowed going to the company. The Art of Window Dressing™ Brand Positioning Integrated Marketing Campaign won Best Consumer Advertising Campaign. The Art of Window Dressing umbrella positioning represents the Hunter Douglas belief that well-designed window fashions should do more than cover a window – they should actually enhance the beauty of a room’s décor while also providing functional benefits that add to the enjoyment of everyday living. The new positioning is brought to life in striking new consumer advertising, design books and POS materials, with a new TV commercial, website integration and other campaign extensions underway.
Best Trade Advertising Campaign went to the 2010 Hunter Douglas Promotional Programs. These fully integrated marketing programs included the Energy Efficient Window Fashions Sale, which educated consumers and dealers in spring about energy-efficient products and the savings they can achieve; the summer It's Sheer Genius employed hip graphics to promote generous rebate savings on several popular styles and The Home for the Holidays, which was designed to capture sales in the important fall season, touted lifting system upgrades and consumer rebates on select styles. These programs drove in-market consumers to Hunter Douglas dealers, resulting in considerable sales increases for promoted products.
The Hunter Douglas Alliance Dealer Websites tied for Best Marketing Technology. More than 1,700 dealers now have Hunter Douglas-sponsored consumer websites, which are designed for Search Engine Optimization and include a link from the Hunter Douglas Dealer Locator. Each dealer can customize his or her site to give it a personal touch and add specific store content, including promotions and driving directions. They can choose the level of website functionality, from Starter to Platinum. Dealers also benefit from automatic consumer fulfillment of a free decorating book. The 2011 Luminette® Privacy Sheers & Modern Draperies Sample Book also won in a tie for Best Sampling Program. This is a book you can judge by the cover. Its beautiful faux- leather accents and elegant design are accurate indicators of the quality product inside. Easy- to-use and functional, it includes a product overview book and three photo books — one each for Luminette Privacy Sheers, Luminette Modern Draperies and the Counterparts® coordination programs. The sheer fabrics are sampled flat, stacked and with vanes; and drapery fabric is sampled in large waterfall swatches.
Best Point-of-Sale Display went to the Audio Display in the “Move” Designer Roller Shades Update Kit. Ideal for countertops, this interactive audio display allows dealers and customers to hear all the new program highlights at the touch of a button: PowerRise® 2.0, new fabrics, the Dual Roller Shade and the Harmony Program™. Dealer response to the piece has been overwhelming. It’s convenient, easy-to-use and "speaks" for itself, allowing one consistent, comprehensive message at every location.
The Hunter Douglas Media Player for Showcase and Retail Display Systems was named Best Point-of-Sale Display Honorable Mention. An industry first, this interactive piece easily installs into the corner module of both display systems and comes with a memory card pre-loaded with information on all product categories, motorization, energy efficiency and privacy/light control. When the player is turned on, a Hunter Douglas commercial will play continuously, without sound. Once a button is pressed, the commercial stops and the information pertaining to that button begins to play, with sound. Also an industry first, Hunter Douglas Webcasts were honored with Best Trade Education. Training as close as possible to face-to-face, webcasts support the online training initiative in The Learning Center on My.HunterDouglas.com. They launched in February after a year of research on vendors, equipment and testing with dealers to determine the appropriate length and how to keep them engaged. To date, two 45-minute sessions on measuring trained more than 1,200 people.
HD Meeting for Alliance Dealers garnered Honorable Mention for Best Trade Education. This live web conference training, offered bi-monthly no charge, helps dealers build repeat/ referral business, increase sales and measure existing systems. More than 2,000 dealers attended sessions in 2010. The choice of topics includes business management, lead management, website development/SEO, hiring and motivating staff and showroom design. There’s a particular focus on social media, with sessions on online social networking, marketing with Google and e-mail marketing.
